Rock mechanics in the investigation and construction of Tumut 1 Underground Power Station, Snowy Mountains, Australia

Plate 4 – Photoelastic Studies

Plate 4. - Photoelastic Studies

(a) Alternative arrangement of the power station with parallel machine hall and transformer hall. Model is under vertical compression, with no lateral restraint.
(b) Stress concentrating effect of a V-notch gelatine model, with side pressure approximately equal to the vertical stress due to gravity. Side pressure applied by means of flexible bags filled with liquid of the same density as the gelatine.
